2010 LAPTA Legislative Conference

On January 9, 2010, the Louisiana PTA held its second annual Legislative Conference in Baton Rouge at the State Capitol. State Representative Patricia Smith, House Education Committee, gave an informative update on current legislation and possible new bills that will be considered during the next session in March. She fielded numerous questions from our delegates and has encouraged all of us to contact her or their own legislators with future questions and concerns.

BESE Board member Penny Dastugue followed Representative Smith. She reported on the most current status of the High School Redesign as well as the Common Core Standards and touched briefly on the Race To The Top.

Two speakers from the State Board of Education, Mr. Robert Schaff and Mr. Michael Coburn, presented before lunch. Mr. Schaff  gave a power point presentation on PSB, Positive Behavior Support, while Mr. Coburn discussed current federally funded after school programs.

The delegates met after lunch to discuss the morning session and develop position statements based on the all the information presented. Two issues were decided upon – an updated position on PSB and a statement in support of the requirement for all juveniles held in government facilities to work toward and receive their GED.

All in all, the conference was full of interesting and useful information. We would strongly encourage all units to consider sending at least one delegate each year so that all of our PTA units can stay informed and make the best decisions for their students and school communities. Special thanks to Chris Cohea and Robyn Hutchinson for their help with the refreshments and lunch!

Sincerely,

Susan S. Strain, DVM
